This spring, local artist Laura Sanderson of Shreen Water Gallery comes to Gutchpool Farm to deliver 10 hours of watercolour tuition. Held over five two-hour evening sessions, this course is aimed at beginners or those looking to refresh their skills.
Course content includes:
- Demonstration and discussion of well-known artists’ work, both historical and contemporary
- Paper types and stretching on board
- Skills including: mark making; colour theory and mixing with examples of dilution; concentrated colour; hard and soft edges; an introduction to working wet-into-wet; and using sketches to develop compositions
- Using tone to develop contrast, light and shade, and to describe form
- Speed painting to develop observation, mixing and responsiveness
- Plein air sketching (weather permitting), use of photos and painting; highlighting aspects of the land here at the farm
Please note, we ask participants to bring with them the following equipment for the course:
- 4B pencil
- Pale grey water soluble pencil
- Masking tape
- Cotman water colours: Lemon Yellow, Alizarin Crimson, Cerulean Blue, Ultra Marine Blue, Burnt Umber (a 12 x 8ml tube collection on Amazon costs £16.00)
- Preferable but not essential: use of a camera (e.g. smart phone) and a printer
Boards, paper, three basic brushes and all other materials will be provided for you.
